Maholm drops first game
Unearned run gives Spinners victory

LOWELL, Mass. — First-round draft pick Paul Maholm allowed five hits, no earned
runs and struck out four in five innings. He also recorded his first professional defeat, 1-0, on Thursday night
Lowell scored an unearned run in the fourth as Matt Murton reached on an error by shortstop Justin Harris and scored on a fielder’s
choice by Brandon Moss.
The Cutters (39-25) struggled at the plate, recording just five hits, including none for extra bases. Lowell starter Jose Vaquendo
recorded his seventh win, allowing three hits and striking out nine in six innings. David Sanders and Brian Marshall
combined to allow two hits in relief for the Spinners (33-29). The three pitchers did not walk a batter.
Lowell’s Kevin Jordan and Murton both went 2-for-3. Leadoff hitter Nyjer Morgan and Harris, the No. 9 hitter, had two hits each for
the Cutters.
