Jackson flirts
with no-hitter
BURLINGTON, Vt. Hudson, N.H., native Kyle Jackson tossed a no-hitter for 6
2/3 innings to lead the Lowell Spinners to a 5-1 victory over the Vermont Expos
last night before 1,643 fans.
Jackson (1-1), a former Alvirne High School star, had his no-hit bid ended
when Kory Casto singled up the middle with two outs in the seventh inning.
Jackson was then replaced after the next batter, Josh Whitesell, ripped an RBI
double to right field.
The hit cut Lowell's lead to 3-1, but David Sanders came on to record the
next out of the inning.
The Spinners (38-35), assured of their second-best record since joining the
New York-Penn League in 1996, added two insurance runs in the eighth. Sanders
pitched a scoreless eighth and Brian Marshall
kept the Expos (19-55) off the board in the bottom of the ninth.
Robert Evans blasted a solo home run in the fifth for the Spinners, just the
second Lowell hit off Vermont starter Nehomar Ochoa, to get the visitors on the
board. In the sixth, Jeremy West drove in a run with a fielder's choice grounder
and Brandon Moss singled home Matt Murton to make it 3-0.
In the eighth, Iggy Suarez scored on a wild pitch by Vermont relief pitcher
Tyler Kirkman and West followed with an RBI single which plated Murton. Lowell
played flawlessly in the field, while the Expos made four errors.
Lowell ends its 2003 season today at the Expos. The Spinners will send Arthur
Santos (2-4, 2.18 ERA) to the mound.
