LUGNUTS WIN OPENING DAY WITH SHUTOUT WIN

Battle Creek - Kyle Boyer went 4-4 with an RBI and Sean Marshall(1-0) worked six shutout innings while fanning seven as the Lugnuts 1-0 took care of the Battle Creek Yankees(0-1) by a 3-0 count in front of 1,360 fans at C.O. Brown Stadium.

Marshall and Yankees starter Chase Wright pitched shutout ball for the first five innings before the Lugnuts got on the board in the sixth when Brian Dopirak led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Drew Larsen's sac fly. Lansing added another tally in the seventh when Boyer led off with a single and scored three batters later on Ryan Fitzgerald's sacfly, making it 2-0 Lugnuts. Lansing got the game's final run in the eighth when Jake Fox reached on a two-base error by right fielder Estee Harris and scored on Boyer's fourth hit of the night, a sharp single to center field.

Marshall fanned seven in his six innings and Clay Rapada, Randy Wells and Weston O'Brien each worked a scoreless inning in relief, with O'Brien earning his first save of the year.

The series continues tomorrow when the Lugnuts send righty Ronald Bay to the mound against Battle Creek's T.J. Beam. Game time is 6:00 EST.
