SWING TO WIN |
| Arneson drives in two
runs, scores game-winner in 12-inning triumph; Uhl gets win with three
scoreless innings |
Denard Span drilled a two-out single into
center field to bring home Justin Arneson on Wednesday night as the Swing
of the Quad Cities defeated the Lansing Lugnuts, 3-2, in 12 innings at
John O’Donnell Stadium. Jon Uhl lasted three scoreless innings of relief
for the Swing to pick up his first victory of the season.
With one out in the 12th and the game knotted, 2-2, Arneson singled to
right against Reid Willett. After a popout, Paul Rutgers poked another
single to right field. Span took two strikes to go down in the count, then
watched as a wild pitch moved runners to second and third. With the count
at 2-2, Span laced a high fastball into center field, bringing home
Arneson for a thrilling 3-2 victory.
Uhl picked up his first win, after going three scoreless innings for Quad
Cities. He found himself in trouble after allowing a two-out double in the
tenth, but got out of it with a fly ball to center. Uhl did not allow a
hit and walked only one man from that point on, striking out one in his
three scoreless frames.
The Swing (13-13) jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the second
inning. Brock Peterson lined a single into center, Dusty Gomon hit a rope
to left, and Scott Whitrock had a single to right to load up the bases.
Arneson followed with a double down the third base line, scoring two for a
2-0 Swing lead. Lansing’s Sean Marshall
retired the next three men to keep the damage at two runs.
Lansing (14-12) chipped away, turning a leadoff walk into a run in the top
of the third, but Swing starter Ricky Barrett dominated from there. The
Swing lefty retired 12 of the final 13 men he faced, and lasted a total of
six innings. Barrett struck out six and walked two, dropping his ERA to
2.63 on the year.
The Lugnuts were able to scratch across a game-tying run against Eric
Brandon in the seventh inning. Kevin Collins led off with a double, and
was bunted to third. JR Taylor threw out Collins at the plate on a
groundball to short, allowing Robinson Chirinos to reach. Chirinos swiped
second base, and scored when CJ Medlin shot a groundball single down the
third base line.
Lansing starter Sean Marshall lasted seven strong inning, allowing two
runs on four hits. He walked only one man, and retired 15 of the 16 men he
faced following Arneson’s double.
Brandon lasted two innings, allowing one run on four hits, with two
strikeouts. Levale Speigner threw a scoreless ninth, fanning the final man
he faced. Uhl followed with three scoreless innings for the win.
