DAYTONA BEACH, Fla—On Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark the Daytona
Cubs were a team who played with a sense of urgency.
Coming in on the heels of season-long five game losing streak, the Cubs felt an
urgent need to put an end to their recent skid. Fortunately, pitchers Sean
Marshall and Randy Wells also felt an urgent need to go home and enjoy the rest
of their holiday weekend, as the two young hurlers turned in a two-hit shutout
performance that lasted just a shade over two hours and the Cubs sailed to the
victory by a final of 3-0.
Marshall (4-2) was both overpowering and economical with his pitches, as the
left-hander faced just two Sarasota batters over the minimum in seven full
innings of work and struck out five to notch his fourth victory of the season.
Wells was also dominant in the waning moments as the righty came in and mowed
down six Reds batters in order and struck out five of them en route to his first
save of the season.
Offensively the Cubs jumped on the scoreboard early as centerfield Chris Walker
led off the first inning with a single and later scored, followed by a solo
homerun from third baseman Scott Moore which made the score 2-0 after one frame.
Daytona later added an insurance run in the seventh when Walker stroked an RBI
single to left center scoring left fielder Kyle Boyer to put the game out of
reach.
With the victory the Cubs snapped the five-game skid and improved to 25-23 to
try and remain within striking distance of the Jupiter Hammerheads and Vero
Beach Dodgers in the East.
Daytona will try to salvage a series split for Game 4 on Monday, as the Cubs
send righty Juan Mateo (3-1, 1.98 ERA) to the rubber to face Reds righty Bobby
Basham (2-2, 4.19 ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 EST.
