Redbirds hold off Cubs
August 12, 2006
Iowa could not overcome Sean Marshall's erratic first inning as Memphis posted a
4-2 victory in Saturday's doubleheader opener.
Marshall (0-1), making his first start as he rehabs from a strained left
oblique muscle, surrendered three runs in the first without yielding a hit. The
23-year-old left-hander walked the first two batters he faced and, after a
sacrifice by Timo Perez, issued another walk to load the bases.
After Brian Martin walked to force in a run, Michel Hernandez hit a grounder
to shortstop Augie Ojeda. But second baseman Buck Coats threw wildly to first in
his attempt at the double play, allowing Junior Spivey and Jorge Toca to score.
Marshall escaped further damage by striking out Derek Wathan. He was charged
with three runs -- two earned -- on two hits and five walks over three innings.
Redbirds starter John Webb (6-10) protected the lead through five frames,
allowing three hits and a walk. He got the first two outs in the sixth before
Michael Restovich singled and Micah Hoffpauir doubled.
Josh Kinney came in and gave up a two-run double to Casey McGehee, but struck
out Geovany Soto to end the inning. He worked a perfect seventh to secure his
second save for Memphis (47-73), which won for the third time in 12 games.
The Cubs (62-58), who had won five of their last six, lost for just the third
time in 13 games against Memphis this season. --Carl Dispoto/MLB.com
