2003 draft
recap - From the Official Chicago Cubs website. (Posted March 24, 2004)
1. Ryan
Harvey, OF
.235 BA/ .339 OBP/ .431 SLG
The biggest key
for Harvey was getting healthy, recovering from a knee injury. He'll begin to
show the Cubs what he's capable of this year, most likely at short-season Boise,
though a lights-out spring could land him at Lansing. He's got tremendous power
potential and profiles as a future right fielder. He has some holes in his
swing, but there's a lot to work with.
2. Jacob Fox,
C
.253 BA/ .327 OBP/ .460 SLG
The Cubs didn't
have a second-round pick, so Fox was their next selection in the third round.
He's an offensive catcher with thump in his bat. He has skills to work with
behind the plate, including pretty decent arm strength. The Michigan product got
100 at-bats in Lansing last year and he'll probably head back there.
3. Tony Richie, C
.175 BA/ .266 OBP/ .211 SLG
A tender shoulder
allowed the Florida St. catcher to pick up just 57 at-bats after signing last
year. Richie is more of a catch and throw guy than Fox, with very good blocking
skills. Offensively, he makes contact and uses the whole field. He profiles as a
Joe Girardi-type player and could compete for playing time in Lansing with Fox.
4. Darin
Downs, LHP
0-2, 6.57 ERA, 38.1 IP, 17 BB, 32 K
Downs is a young
left-hander with a high ceiling, who played at 18 in the Arizona League last
year. He's got a good feel for pitching, like a young Jamie Moyer with stuff and
more velocity. He should grow into his 6-3 frame as he matures. He'll head to
extended Spring Training and then head back to Mesa or to short-season Boise.
5.Sean
Marshall, LHP
6-6, 2.34 ERA, 80.2 IP, 71 H, 23 BB, 99 K
A
6-foot-5 lefty, whose twin brother is with the Red Sox, Marshall has good
command of a fastball, curve and change. His height allows him to pitch on a
downhill plane. After pitching well with Boise, he was the final piece to
Lansing's championship puzzle. He could go back to the Midwest League to start
the year, though there is a chance he'll get pushed up to Daytona.
Best of the rest: OF Kyle Boyer (7th
round) finished fourth in the Northwest League in home runs (9) and fifth in
triples (5). ... 33rd-round OF Jasha Balcom hit .329 in 85 Arizona League ABs.
... RHP Sean Overhalt (35th) had a 0.49 ERA in 18.1 IP with Boise. ...OF Ryan
Fitzgerald (non-drafted free agent) won the Arizona League batting title by
hitting .381, while finishing second in SLG (.634) and third in OBP (.431).
