SEAN MARSHALL NAMED 9TH BEST PROSPECT IN
MIDWEST LEAGUE
9-29-04
RICHMOND, Va. - Former VCU baseball player Sean Marshall
has been named the 9th ranked prospect in the Midwest League as
determined by Baseball America. The left-handed pitcher was a 6th round
draft choice of the Chicago Cubs in 2003 and was playing for the Lansing Lugnuts,
the club’s low-A farm team.
Marshall, who pitched for the Rams from 2001-2003, appeared in
seven games for Lansing, earning a record of 2-0 with an ERA of 1.11. An
opposing league manager stated in the write-up that Marshall was the best
pitcher he saw all season. He was called up to Double-A West Tennessee in
mid-May, and his season ended a month later when he partially ruptured a tendon
in the middle finger of his throwing hand. Marshall has recovered from the
injury and will be playing for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League, a
Major League Baseball organized instructional league for top prospects.
The 2002 CAA Rookie of the Year was also named to Baseball America’s
Freshman All-America team that same year. He was considered one of the
anchors of the 2003 VCU pitching staff which led the country in earned run
average. His twin brother, Brian, also was a member of that staff and now
pitches in the Boston Red Sox farm system.
