Jaxx giving Coats shot to roam in the outfield
The Jackson Sun
Jul 24 2005
Usual Jaxx shortstop Buck Coats has been seeing some time out in center
field over the past week.
He's hitting well this season, hovering around .300 with 30 RBIs, but has
committed 25 errors at shortstop.
As for Coats - he doesn't really care where he's playing as long as he's
in the lineup.
''I think they want to see what I can do out there, and that's fine with
me,'' Coats said. ''I really haven't had much time out there to practice so
I've had a little trouble judging the fly balls.''
He's seen mixed results. On Tuesday, Coats misplayed a ball that resulted
in a two-base error. But on Wednesday, he made an awesome diving catch on
the warning track that saved the game.
''The more places he can play, the better his value,'' Jaxx manager Bobby
Dickerson said. ''We just want to see what he can do.''
Luis Montanez and Brandon Sing are also regular infielders who have seen
extended playing time in the outfield this season.
Injury report
The disabled list has become a crowded place of late, with big lefty Sean
Marshall joining Felix Pie and Jon Connolly among notables in the Jaxx's
infirmary. Here's a report on those that are banged up:
Matt Craig - He didn't play in either game of Wednesday's doubleheader
but should be ready to go very soon. He bruised his quad running into
catcher Jose Reyes on Tuesday when the two were chasing a pop-up.
Felix Pie - Progress is still slow, and Dickerson said he had not heard
anything new. He still may be a few weeks away from contributing.
Angel Guzman - One of the prized possesions in the Cubs' system,
Dickerson said that Guzman is finally throwing some flat-ground sessions.
But he also said that he did not expect Guzman in Double-A this season.
Sean Marshall - He's had soreness in his bicep and shoulder area, so
tests are being done to see if there is real damage or just sore muscles.
