Paints 'grind' out big win in Florence
The Gazette Staff
As far as the run toward the postseason goes, the Paints are still on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. But if it's going to happen, games like Sunday's come-from-behind win over Florence will be the reason.

Down 4-0 after four innings, Chillicothe rallied for six runs - five of which came in the final two innings - to down the Freedom 6-4.

"To grind it out like we did was really huge," Paints assistant coach Marty Dunn told WXIZ radio's postgame show. "Today we came out like this is day number seven of an eight-day road trip. You could see the guys didn't have much energy."

Fresh off the bus to northern Kentucky from a six-day stay in the St. Louis area where the Paints went 3-3 in six games with River City and Gateway, the team came out flat against Florence.

The Freedom put up two runs in the second inning and an additional run in each of the next two to pull ahead 4-0 against Paints starter Daryl Arreola.

Florence had just one extra base hit during the process, but in that same span, the Paints remained hitless.

Jon Poterson broke up the no-hitter with one out in the fifth, rapping a double off the center field fence.

Lance Koenig followed up with a double off the fence in left to score Poterson.

The score remained 4-1 through seven innings. The Paints quickly got things going in the eighth, however, when Travis Storrer led off the inning with a double against Florence starter Josh Bruns.

Bruns got ahead of the next batter, Gavin Ng, no balls and two strikes before hitting him with a pitch.

After J.T. Thomas sacrifice bunted the runners into scoring position, the Freedom went to its bullpen for Jason Bowlin.

The first batter Bowlin faced was Paints' All-Star Travis Garcia, who promptly crushed his team-high 11th home run of the season over the fence in left.

Garcia's shot tied the game at 4.

Ryan Flanigan came in to pitch a scoreless eighth inning for Chillicothe and keep the game tied.

The Paints' offense picked back up where it left of in the ninth as Paul Rutgers hit a lead off double and came into score on a single by Storrer.

Ng would single and come around to score an insurance run.

Flanigan (7-2) turned the ball over to closer Eric Teall who worked a perfect ninth inning for his 14th save.

"Our guys came out and did what was necessary to get a win," Dunn said.

The win pulls the Paints even with Florence for second place in the Frontier League's East Division at 33-36.

Brian Marshall (2-3, 4.99 ERA) will get the start today for the Paints against Florence's Luke Brown (2-1, 2.57) in Chillicothe's final game of the eight-day road trip.

The Paints return to VA Memorial Stadium Tuesday for four games - two apiece with Slippery Rock and Washington.
