Sean Marshall was an observer when the Chicago Cubs begin their first-round National League playoff series against the Arizona Diamondbacks last night.
The left-hander, a former star at Manchester High School and VCU, wasn't among the 11 pitchers selected for the division series roster.
Marshall, 25, finished the season 7-8 with a 3.92 ERA, 35 walks and 67 strikeouts after he was recalled from Iowa (Pacific Coast League) on May 22.
The last start for Marshall, a sixth-round draft choice of the Cubs in 2003, came Sept. 15, when he allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks in 22/3 innings of a 4-3 loss at St. Louis.
Arizona third baseman Mark Reynolds, a former University of Virginia star, will be on the Diamondbacks' roster.
A rookie who was recalled from Double-A on May 17, Reynolds hit .279 with 17 home runs and 62 RBI.
