If Ted Lilly’s knee and shoulder turn out OK, then the Cubs made a terrific trade Thursday.
But even if Lilly isn’t healthy as soon as the Cubs expect, then the move to acquire left-handed relievers John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny was necessary.
Ideally, Sean Marshall would stay in the bullpen because he has been among baseball’s best in that role this season. The addition of Grabow behind Marshall gives manager Lou Piniella wonderful flexibility.
But if Lilly can’t come back on schedule, then Marshall can give the Cubs a lefty in the rotation and still leave the Cubs a respected situational left-hander. Marshall hasn’t been nearly as good as a starter, but it might be less of an issue if the lineup continues to destroy teams the way everybody has been waiting for. |
