Cubs general manager Jim Hendry didn't make a trade Friday, as the nonwaiver deadline passed at 3 p.m.

That doesn't mean Hendry wasn't happy.

"I was real happy," Hendry said by telephone. "Our bullpen is in good shape. To get a pitcher the caliber of John Grabow really rounds it off. Lou (manager Piniella) has seven good arms to choose from, and this really can save on the wear and tear on Sean Marshall."

Hendry was talking about Thursday's trade for left-handed reliever John Grabow and lefty starter Tom Gorzelanny from Pittsburgh for pitcher Kevin Hart and two minor-leaguers. Grabow and Marshall give the Cubs two lefties in their bullpen.

Grabow joined the Cubs Friday in Florida. A report on cubs.com said Gorzelanny will throw a bullpen session Sunday in Florida. It's likely Gorzelanny will start for the Cubs Tuesday at Cincinnati.

Hendry said he wasn't close to making another deal Friday. Any deal would have been to add depth, he indicated.

Minor matters: Former Blue Jays closer B.J. Ryan threw 25 pitches in 12/3 innings for Class AAA Iowa on Thursday as he tries to make it back to the big leagues with the Cubs. Ryan threw 11 strikes as he walked one and struck out one.

Ryan can opt out of his Cubs minor-league deal after 15 days from his first appearance at Iowa. He made his Iowa debut Tuesday.

Catcher Geovany Soto will continue a rehab stint at Class AA Tennessee on Monday, with Jim Hendry watching. Soto, who is on the disabled list with a strained oblique muscle, may be able to return to the lineup next weekend in Colorado. He currently is in Mesa, Ariz.

Center fielder Brett Jackson, the Cubs' No. 1 pick in this year's draft, has been promoted from Class A Boise to Class A Peoria. Jackson hit .330 with 1 homer, 15 RBI and an on-base percentage of .443 in 15 games at Boise.
